NEXT COURSES: 

Our RYA Youth Saturday Sailing Club here! At 12:30 PM at Piddinghoe lake and will continue every Saturday from Saturday the 6th of September to Saturday the 18th of October. Each 5-hour session takes place at Piddinghoe Lake and offers a fun and engaging mix of sailing practice, skill-building, and progression through RYA techniques week by week.

Each session includes a short break for sailors to hydrate and enjoy some snacks—so don’t forget to pack a lunch!

Important Information:

 

  • If you'd like your child to achieve their RYA Youth Stage 1, they will only need to attend 4 weeks.

 

  • If your child already has their RYA Youth Stage 1 qualification and you would like them to achieve the RYA Youth Stage 2 qualification, they will need to attend 4 weeks. 

 

We can be flexible if your child cannot make some of the dates and may also be able to teach Youth Stages 3 & 4. Please email info@thebrightonwatersports.co.uk to enquire. 

 

Just want to practice? Join us for Supervised Sailing 

Our Supervised Youth Sailing offers kids ages 8-16 the chance to get on the water and practice sailing with expert guidance. In small groups, children will receive hands-on instruction from certified instructors, ensuring safety while building sailing skills. With an instructor always present to provide guidance and support as needed, kids can confidently practice boat handling, navigation, and teamwork in a fun and safe environment. 

Time: 12:30PM – 5:30PM

Location: Piddinghoe Lake, Ceder Lane BN9 9AF. 

Price: 7 weeks: £330 / 4 weeks: £189 / 1 week: £48

RYA Youth Stage 1 &  2  Dinghy Sailing

Operated from our lake in Piddinghoe, just 10 mins outside of Brighton. RYA stage 1 and 2 takes your child to a confident level of sailing, ready to sail solo. Our lake is safe and secure, it has wind but without the waves that are often over over whelming for kids when learning.

RYA Stage 1 DINGHY SAILING

 Course pre requisites Stage 1

  • Age 8-14yrs
  • Must be able to swim.

What to bring

  • Bring a water bottle. Hot drinks provided.
  • Suitable footwear- old trainers, wetsuits boots/shoes (no flipflops or crocs)
  • Wetsuit and buoyancy aid if you have, or we can provide.
  • Windproof jacket and trousers. (windproof jacket can be provided)
  • Warm base layers to change into.

Understanding the RYA Stage 1 Sailing Course: (approx. 16 hrs)

The RYA Stage 1 sailing course serves as an introduction to the world of sailing. It is suitable for beginners with little to no prior experience. During this course, participants will learn the basics of boat handling, including rigging, launching, and recovery. They will also gain an understanding of essential sailing terminology, wind awareness, and basic sailing techniques. By the end of the course, participants will be able to sail a dinghy in light winds under supervision.

RYA Stage 2 DINGHY SAILING

 Course pre requisites Stage 2

  • 8-14 years (flexible with age)
  • Must be able to swim.
  • Stage 1 sailing ability

What to bring

  • Bring a water bottle, hot drinks provided.
  • Suitable footwear- old trainers, wetsuits boots/shoes (no flipflops or crocs)
  • Wetsuit and buoyancy aid if you have, or we can provide.
  • Windproof jacket and trousers.(we can provide wind jackets)
  • Warm base layers to change into.

 

    Understanding the RYA Stage 2 Sailing Course:

    The stage 2 course is the next step, setting out the foundations of sailing for you, sailing ability along with theoretical knowledge is assumed to be up to stage 1 standard. The course consists of rigging a dinghy with minimal help, understanding how to launch a boat in different wind directions, and learning standard sailing manoeuvres. The course also covers essential safety knowledge to be used when sailing. Once stage 2 has been achieved the sailor will be able to sail and make decisions on and off the water in good conditions. Next stage 3 and/or race training.

    • Basic sailing, practicing steering in all directions
    • Learning parts of the boat
    • Rigging boats.
    • Hoisting sails, setting sails and trimming
    •  Introducing all points of Sail
    • Tacking and Gybing
    • Sailing around a course
    • Ropework

    Blue Green Algae Notice

    Blue Green Algae is found in most UK inland waterways and can be found in Piddinghoe Lake. While usually harmless, seasonal peaks can cause visible symptoms. Brighton Watersports monitors water quality closely; if tests show any issues near your booking, we will notify you with guidance. Click here for more information

    FAQs

    We require 28 days notice before the start of course/ session if you wish to cancel your position. This enables us to refill the position. We will accept your cancellation after this date, but will not refund any payment after this date unless we have refilled your position or booking.



    After booking, the course dates you selected are the ones you are expected to attend. This is because each lesson in the course is unique and tailored to be step by step progression. If you cannot make it, you can join the next available course where you left off.

    For example, if you cannot attend session 3 of Stage 1, we will move you to the next Stage 1 course to continue and complete it.

    In the unlikely situation where we need to cancel, (which is normally beyond our control) we will either rearrange the session date or a full
    refund will be issued.




    We provide wetsuits, sailing cags and buoyancy aids.

    Lunch and snacks (there are no nearby shops)

    Some change for teas and coffees (50p each)

    A reusable water bottle

    Suntan lotion

    Towel for a shower after

    We need a minimum of 3 people to run a course. If this is not the case, we will contact you and rearrange.

    If the course is full, still get in contact- we can make other arrangements or check if there's an opportunity to increase the number of participants.

    + All customers must be able to swim at least 25 metres, and not be under the influence of any drugs or alcohol.
    + Anyone under 16, must be accompanied by an adult (One adult per child under 16).
    + Minimum age is 8 yrs, subject to adult's experience.
    + All customers must provide us with some form of identity.
